The problem
Why do batteries catch fire?
A lithium-ion battery contains an enormous amount of energy in a small volume. Heat is generated during charging. If charging takes too long due to overcharging, the temperature inside the battery rises.
In the event of a defect, damage, or a cheap charger, this process can spiral out of control: a chain reaction known as 'thermal runaway' . The result: the battery catches fire — often with toxic smoke and explosive force.
